San Luis Scion Asks People to Text their Representative on Speakership Issue . . . Representative-elect Edgar San Luis (Independent, Laguna, 4th district) yesterday appealed to the public to write, call, email or text their congressmen, especially the first-termers, on their choice of Speaker of the House of Representatives. "The choice for the Speaker of the House of Representatives is too important to be left to us congressmen and congresswomen alone," said San Luis. "We need leaders, not dealers!" According to him, the "issue of leadership in the House goes beyond numerical superiority among those in the majority coalition. It is not a question of numbers. It is a question of integrity." . . . . . . more CJ PUNO SPEAKS ON THE LIFE AND DEATH OF DR. JOSE RIZAL . . . By Katrina M. Martinez There is no greater experience in one’s life than to live with freedom, peace, and justice. Speaking at last week’s commemoration of the 146th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal at the Rizal National Shrine in Calamba, Laguna, Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno underscored the significance of the life and death of the country’s national hero in the struggle for national independence. . . . more Palace Backs Supreme Court Multi-Sectoral Summit on Killings . . . Malacanang welcomed today Chief Justice Reynato Puno’s proposal for a broad-based summit to discuss measures to address the problem of extra-judicial killings. In a statement issued this afternoon, Press Secretary and concurrent Presidential Spokesperson Ignacio R. Bunye also stressed that the "administration has a clear policy condemning cold-blooded murders and other crimes." "In line with this policy, we support the Chief Justice’s initiative for a multisectoral summit on the role of the judiciary against these killings," he said. "We also assure the people that our drive to get to the bottom of these killings is purposive and relentless," Bunye added. . . . . . more THOSE BUMPER STICKERS . . . "The National Statistics Office projects that the number of Filipino elderly will surge to nine million in three years", I e-mailed a demographer friend. "Care to discuss what that implies?" She didn’t zip back the usual professorial commentary. Instead, she sent on a bunch of car stickers. "These, of course, are not for you," she scribbled on the covering note. "But feel free to share with friends who’re showing signs of wear and tear." Here they are: Sticker 1 : "Goodbye Tension. Hello Pension." . . . . . . . . more
