Economic Activities
Laguna enjoys both agricultural and industrial economic success. Its rich
natural resources enable the province to maintain a flourishing agri-based
economy while enjoying industrial economic success at the same time. Big
companies engaged in light to medium industries such as electronics and food
processing contribute to Laguna's economic success. Small and medium-scale
industries such as woodcrafts, basketry, and papier-maché are also economic
players.
Based on monitoring by the national government, Laguna is among the country's
top growth areas in terms of the number of investment projects and employment
generation.
As of 1995, Laguna's government-preferred investments (as registered with the
Board of Investments or BOI) and given various fiscal and nonfiscal incentives
amounted to about P37 billion or US $1.4 billion. For 1995 alone, approximately
P6 billion of US $227 thousand worth of investments were approved.
Laguna also boasts of a burgeoning export sector. In 1995, it exported
approximately US $ 548.5 million worth of world-standard goods.
